Requirements for Renting

Are there age requirements for renting?

Yes. Fees, permissible truck types and minimum age requirements may vary by location. So, prior to picking up your rental truck, it's best to check out the underage rental requirements for the city in which you are renting.

In most U.S. states, Budget Truck Rental locations rent to customers 24 years and older. Some Budget Truck Rental locations also may rent to customers between the ages of 18-23 with the following requirements:

  • Renters 18-23 years of age must present two valid forms of acceptable identification, a valid driver's license and one other form of ID. For details, please see FAQ “What kind of credentials do I need?”
  • At time of rental, an additional $25-per-day underage surcharge for drivers 18-23 years of age will be applied.
  • If a renter wishes to add an additional driver to the rental policy, the second driver must be 18 or older, and present a valid driver’s license. The additional driver fee will also apply. Please see FAQ “May someone else drive a truck I rent?”

Other Minimum Age Requirements

  • Military customers with travel orders may rent at the minimum age of 18.
  • Select corporate customers and military customers may be exempt from the underage fee and be subject to a minimum age requirement of 18. Check with your account representative to see if your company account is eligible.
  • Government employees over the age of 18 traveling on government orders in the U.S. may rent from Budget without a surcharge.
  • U.S. Budget licensee-owned truck locations’ minimum age requirements vary on local rentals, however most allow a minimum age of 18-23 years of age for a small surcharge.
  • For any Budget Truck location, contact the location directly to verify the minimum age requirements.

May someone else drive a Budget truck that I rent?

Yes, you may add additional drivers to your rental agreement when you pick up your rental. At most U.S. locations, additional drivers must present a valid, acceptable driver's license, and be at least 18 years old (see above for minimum age exceptions), and be required to pay a one-time additional driver's fee. At most locations, exemptions from the additional driver fee include:

  • a qualified employer or co-employee, while engaged in a business activity with renters using their employer's Budget corporate-contracted rate.
  • the licensed companion driver of a non-licensed renter with a disability. Other additional drivers are subject to the additional driver fee.

Exceptions to the underage policy for additional drivers:

  • U.S. licensee-owned truck locations might have separate requirements for local rentals. Please contact the location directly to verify additional drive and fee requirements. For local moves, the additional driver is a flat fee of $12 per transaction.

For one-way moves, the additional driver fee is

  • 1 day = $12
  • 2 days = $17
  • 3 days = $21
  • 4 days = $23
  • 5 days = $25
  • 6 days = $27
  • 7 days = $29
  • 8+ days = $31

Do you require a deposit to rent a truck?

Yes. Your deposit type, amount and method of payment will vary by Budget Truck location.

Credit and Debit Card Rules

At the time of a U.S. rental, Budget Truck generally requires a credit card hold of $150 for local truck rentals. For one-way truck rentals, we require a credit card hold of $150 and the estimated cost of the rental.

If you choose not to return your truck on or before your scheduled return date, we may place an additional hold on your card (depending on how long you keep the truck) to cover expected rental charges. Upon your return of the truck, all holds will be released, and the actual cost of the rental will be charged. Please note that your bank may take up to two weeks to post the released credit hold to your card. Unfortunately, we cannot be held responsible for any returned checks due to debit card hold processing.

For full details, be sure to read the helpful terms and conditions that appear during the online reservation process and on your reservation confirmation page and/or e-mail.

Cash Rules

Budget accepts cash as a form of payment.

Am I required to take the insurance and protection products?

No, but you are responsible for the truck in the event of damage. Check with your respective insurance company to see if you have ample coverage while renting. In the event you don’t have proper coverage, Budget sells a variety of optional Insurance and protection plans for your truck rental. Click here to learn more.

Does my own insurance protect me in the event of an accident?

Given the vast number of insurers and policies, it is extremely difficult for us to know which entitlements accompany your policy. We strongly recommend that you contact your insurance company to verify your coverage when renting a truck. If you don’t have proper protection, Budget Truck sells a variety of optional insurance and protection plans for your rental.

  • Always verify any existing coverage you personally might have with your personal, auto, home, credit card or AAA insurance. Never assume you’re covered without asking.
  • Ask your auto insurance agent about your existing coverage. Specifically find out if you’re covered for a rental truck that’s over 8,600 lbs. gross vehicle weight or under 25,500 gross vehicle weight. Your agent's contact information is typically listed on the insurance card provided to you when you purchase or renew your policy. Always keep it handy!
  • Ask your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance you might have that protects your household cargo. Specifically inquire about the extent to which you’re covered while your goods are in transit between your current and new home.
  • To verify whether you’re covered by the credit card you plan to use for your truck rental, call the credit card company directly before renting your Budget truck. Most credit cards include a toll-free phone number on the back of the card. Specifically state that the rental is not for an automobile, but for a moving truck.

What are the benefits of purchasing the plans?

The benefits of the plans vary by location. If you have questions about a specific plan, please check with the renting location or contact us in the U.S. toll-free at 800-462-8343.

Notice: This is only a summary of the Optional Insurance and Protection Plans; additional details are explained in the brochures available at the rental counter. The specific terms, conditions and exclusions thereof are subject to all provisions, limitations and exclusions contained in the policies issued by ACE American Insurance Company, one of the U.S.-based subsidiaries of ACE Limited (NYSE : ACE). “ACE” and the ACE logo are service marks of the ACE Group, which is comprised of ACE Limited and its subsidiaries.

Your personal insurance policy providing coverage on an owned vehicle, or other personal property policy, may provide additional coverage, and to that extent, the insurance coverage described above may provide a duplication of your personal coverage.

Do you offer towing insurance that covers the vehicle being towed?

Yes. Auto Tow Protection (ATP) provides renters with coverage for damage to their personal automobile – while it’s being towed by the rental truck using a car carrier or tow dolly also rented from Budget.

ATP offers coverage for loss of, or damage to, the renter’s personal automobile resulting from:

  • Fire or explosion
  • Flood
  • Windstorm or hail
  • Landslide
  • Damage or overturn of the rental truck or towing equipment
  • Collision of the rental truck or towing equipment with another vehicle or object

ATP provides coverage for loss of, or damage to, the renter’s personal automobile on an actual cash value basis up to $15,000. There is a $250 deductible per loss. See ATP terms and conditions or view related brochure at the rental counter.

Do you offer business insurance and protection plans?

Absolutely. Before your next business move, review Budget Truck Rental’s competitively priced optional protection plans and popular protection options. Remember that, as a commercial truck rental customer, you’re not required to purchase a plan if you can provide a "Certificate of Insurance.” In that case, the Certificate must be approved and on file in the Budget Safety Department prior to the rental. See your Commercial Account Manager for more details or Click here to review protection plans in detail.

Will you accept any other form of identification in lieu of a driver’s license?

In lieu of a valid driver's license, U.S. rental locations will accept traffic citations or summonses issued by officials in these seven states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. The citation only will be accepted up until the court appearance date shown on the citation or summons. A customer who presents a citation/summons in lieu of a driver's license is required to present a second means of personal identification with a signature on it. Any second means of I.D. with a signature is acceptable, such as a department store card, passport, library card or company I.D. with a signature.

Do any special terms or conditions apply to my rental?

Sometimes. For example, in some particularly rugged parts of the country, and on specific gravel and dirt roads not regularly maintained, Budget prohibits use of its trucks. At most locations, interstate travel is permissible, while other locations require that the vehicle does not cross state lines. Similarly, in some states bordering Mexico and Canada, travel across U.S. borders might be restricted (Canada) or prohibited (Mexico). Be sure to read the helpful terms and conditions that appear on your rental contract. And when you pick up your truck, the rental counter agent can answer any additional questions.

We offer a long-term rental option for customers who need a truck for an extended period of time. Contact us at 1-800-GO-BUDGET to reserve your truck today!

Do you rent trucks by the hour?

If you plan to return the truck after hours, please confirm the after-hours policy with the drop-off location.

If a truck is picked up later in the day, most locations offer an after-hours drop-off. In these cases, the truck must be returned before the opening of that location the next business day. You MUST have Budget Truck Rental’s express authorization to extend any due date by calling 1-800-GO-BUDGET. Otherwise, Budget Truck Rental may be forced to enact all recovery efforts including seizing the truck and/or reporting the truck to the authorities as ”stolen.”

What should I do if I have problems with my truck?

Before you start driving, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the truck's equipment and operation, including heat and A/C, radio, lights, windshield wipers, spare tire, seat belts and door locks, and gas tank access. Getting distracted trying to figure out those things while driving can be dangerous. Don’t wait until the fuel warning light goes on to think about buying gas, especially if you don’t know how far it is between gas stations. If, in the unlikely event that your truck malfunctions on a major thoroughfare, lock the doors, turn on the hazard lights and, if you have a cell phone, call the police or, in the U.S., phone 24-hour roadside assistance at 800-423-1640. Don’t leave your truck. Wait in the truck for service or the police to arrive. Accepting help from strangers, no matter how well intended, is not a good idea unless you can’t call for help and they can. If, in the unlikely event that an emergency light illuminates on your control panel, don’t ignore it. Use good judgment about whether you can get back to our location safely and don’t hesitate to call our 24-hour roadside assistance in the U.S. at 800-423-1640.

May I change where or when I return my truck after I have picked it up?

To make a modification to a rental after you have signed the rental agreement and have taken possession of the vehicle, you must contact the dealer location where the truck was picked-up.

What should I do if I’m involved in an accident with a Budget Truck?

First, contact the police (911). Next, contact our Emergency Roadside Assistance at 800-423-1640. Then, contact your personal auto insurance company and establish a claim for the damage. You will also need to contact our claims office at 800-551-5998. Lastly, make sure to complete a Budget Truck Accident/Incident Report providing as much information as possible for Budget to complete our claims process.

I purchased coverage. Do I still need to fill out an accident report?

Yes. Regardless of purchasing coverage, an accident report needs to be filled out.

I purchased your insurance and the dealer told me that it covers the entire truck.

We offer two types of damage waivers: Limited Damage Waiver (LDW) and Physical Damage Waiver (PDW). With the Limited Damage Waiver (LDW), the renter is responsible for the first $500.00 worth of damage to the Budget vehicle. With the Physical Damage Waiver (PDW), the renter is responsible for $0.00 worth of damage to the Budget vehicle. The waivers cover the entire truck except “overhead” damage caused by a collision with an overhead object such as a tree, overpass, overhead line or garage structure. For example, if lightning strikes a tree and the tree branch falls on to the truck, you will be covered. But if the renter/driver hits a tree branch with the truck, you will not be covered. The waivers also exclude “curbing” of the tires, described as damage to the sidewall of the tire.

Why doesn’t the insurance I purchased cover “overhead” damage and “curbing” of the tires?

Budget does not actually offer insurance to cover the vehicle. We offer what is known as a damage waiver. We are self-insured and pay for the damages up front and bill the renter afterward. This waiver comes with some exclusions including “overhead” damage and “curbing” of the tires. These are high-risk areas and Budget wants to ensure that our renters/drivers drive cautiously and are aware of their surroundings while operating our vehicles. These items fall under customer negligence.

Where is it stated that “overhead” damage and “curbing” of the tires is not covered?

Please see Paragraph 13 of the Terms and Conditions. Also, within the Rental Agreement itself, wherein renters initial and sign acknowledging: I agree that, notwithstanding any of the other terms of this Agreement, and subject to applicable law, I will remain responsible for any damage to the vehicle if there is a violation of this agreement and/or if the Vehicle damage is caused by a collision with an overhead object. This language also is located on the Vehicle Damage Description Form that renters initial at the time of check out.

May I purchase coverage that does include “overhead” damage and “curbing” of the tires?

Budget does not offer coverage for “overhead” damage, but does offer an additional coverage that would cover “curbing” of tires. Our Roadside SafetyNet (RSN) coverage covers items such as curbing of tires, rim replacement, jump starts, winch outs, key replacement and lockout service.

Why didn’t someone tell me that I would be responsible for tire damage?

Tires are not excluded from the renter’s responsibility and are treated like any other claim. To help reduce your financial responsibility, you may purchase our Physical Damage Waiver (PDW) and/or our Roadside SafetyNet (RSN).

I dropped the vehicle off overnight and received a call and/or billing for damages to the vehicle that were not evident when I dropped it off.

You remain responsible for the truck and all charges, losses and damages to the truck that occur prior to the location opening and confirming that the truck has been returned to the premises.

What if I’m not at fault for the accident?

Be sure that you write down the other party's contact information so we may pursue them and/or their insurance company on your behalf for the damages. Please note that our pursuit of the other party does not absolve you from your contractual obligation to pay for the damage.

After I filed my claim, I discovered that I will be charged a Loss of Use and an Administrative Fee. Why?

Loss of Use - As a renter, you are contractually liable for the loss of the specific vehicle you rented, per the terms and conditions of the rental contract. When our vehicle is unavailable to be rented, we are entitled to be compensated for that loss.

Administrative Fee - Budget Truck is not an insurance company. We are self-insured, and the expense of processing our claims is passed on only to the responsible parties involved. We are legally entitled to have the vehicle returned to pre-accident condition, which includes any expenses related to administering a claim.

My insurance company paid the claim, so why are you sending me a letter requesting the remaining balance?

In most cases, the balance due represents the uninsured elements of the claim such as your deductible, Loss of Use and Administration Fees.
